🌹 Gallery FAQ 🌹
🌹 How do I submit artwork to the Nevermore Gallery?
Our gallery submissions are currently closed! If you are interested in applying for one of our future gallery shows, please keep an eye on our socials for artist calls or subscribe to our monthly newsletter, The Nevermore Nightshade!
If you’re planning to submit work to our gallery, you can find our full gallery policies, submission guidelines, and expectations here.
🌹 Can I create a brand new piece for your exhibition, or can I only submit work that’s already been completed?
Yes! We love when our participating artists create new work specifically for our gallery or to fit a themed exhibition. If you will be creating a new piece for this show, we ask in the gallery application for a detailed written description of your intended artwork, as well as a PDF portfolio with your 5 most recent or most similar works.
Once you have been accepted, we also require that you submit photos of the completed work no later than 2 days prior to the shipping deadline if you are shipping your work, or 2 days prior to the drop-off deadline if you are dropping it off in person. ***If we feel that your final artwork is unfinished, off-theme, improperly framed, or in any other way not “gallery ready,” we reserve the right to deny hanging your artwork in the final gallery show.*** Deadline information can be found in your initial acceptance email.
Written statements of intended work, PDF example portfolio, and photos of the completed work may all be emailed to us at info@nevermoreva.com for approval. Nevermore reserves the right to decline to display any artwork that has not been approved in advance of the exhibition opening date.
🌹What is Nevermore’s stance on artwork made using generative AI?
Nevermore is unequivocally opposed to the use of generative “AI” technology in any form - whether through image generation programs or large language models. This extends beyond the artwork itself and includes the use of AI in any way for ideation/brainstorming, reference materials, advertising, social media, and any part of the creative or business process. We reserve the right to refuse any artwork submitted for gallery exhibition should we have reason to believe that the artist has used generative AI in any part of their process.
🌹 Does all the artwork exhibited at the gallery have to be for sale?
Yes, all artwork submitted for exhibition at Nevermore Gallery must be available for sale. Sales will be paid via commission.
🌹 What does commission mean?
Commission is a mutually beneficial partnership between the exhibiting artist (you) and an authorized seller (us). We sell your work on your behalf at our gallery, splitting the profits with you. Once your item has sold, we pay you via check.
🌹 How much is the gallery commission percentage?
Nevermore Gallery takes a 30% commission of the sale price for artwork displayed and sold in our gallery during the exhibition period. Exhibiting artists receive a 70% commission of the sale price.
🌹 Who owns the artwork before sale?
You do! Until your artwork sells or the end of your exhibition period, it is still yours, just housed in our gallery space.
🌹 Who sets the selling price for the artwork?
You, the artist, will set all your own prices for your artwork sold on commission at Nevermore Gallery. We’re happy to provide guidance based on our own experience, but you are the best judge of what your work is worth.
🌹 Can artists sell their work elsewhere? In other local Richmond galleries? Online?
Yes! Nevermore has no exclusivity clauses. Our mission is to support other working artists, especially those local to the Richmond area, and we’re happy to allow our artists the freedom to sell their work wherever they like. However, we do require that specific works displayed in a gallery exhibition at Nevermore Gallery be available for sale exclusively through Nevermore for the duration of the exhibition period.
🌹After Acceptance Policies & Guidelines FAQ 🌹
🌹 How do I prepare my artwork for display at Nevermore?
To make the exhibition process as efficient as possible, before dropping off or shipping us your artwork, please ensure you’ve done the following:
Fully complete a Gallery Artwork Information Sheet (attached to your acceptance email) and either include it with your artwork as a hard copy or send it digitally via email to info@nevermoreva.com. Please make sure that any artwork with multiple variants, such as different colorways, materials, etc., are listed on separate lines.
Make sure artwork is clean and presentable, and include any standing displays or specialty hanging hardware needed (displays should also be marked with your name)
If your artwork is digital, we require a framed, high-quality giclee print of the work on medium to heavyweight acid-free archival paper. We strongly encourage hand embellishment or other physical additions to digital work, to create a unique “1 of 1” piece for gallery display.
2-Dimensional Artwork must be framed and ready for hanging, following our Framing Guidelines:
Artwork must be mounted and framed in a sturdy, heavy-duty frame. Absolutely no plastic snap-in “poster” type frames will be accepted. For affordable higher-quality framing options, your local thrift store is a great place to check. (examples of acceptable frames will be given upon acceptance)
Frame should be appropriately sized to the artwork; artwork may be displayed with or without matting, but the artwork should not be stretched, compressed, cut, or otherwise altered to fit a frame.
Artwork must have hanging hardware securely mounted to the back. Properly secured gallery wire is preferred. (examples will be given upon acceptance)
(optional, but strongly encouraged) Artwork should have clear rubber bumpers installed on the corners of the frame.
Above all, artwork and frame must both look finished, intentional, and polished. Hand-embellished frames are also acceptable. Please feel free to reach out to us if you have any questions about how this might apply to your artwork specifically!
🌹 If I’m not local to the Richmond area, how do I send my artwork to Nevermore?
While we strongly recommend dropping off artwork in person whenever possible, if original artwork must be mailed to us for a gallery exhibition, please ensure the following:
Before shipment, send clear, well-lit photos of the fully framed artwork, front and back, to info@nevermoreva.com. Please wait to ship your artwork until you have received confirmation and approval from us.
Artwork must be packaged appropriately, in a rigid shipping box with sufficient padding. Absolutely no paper envelopes, soft-sided bubble mailers, etc.
Mailed items must be sent with signature confirmation required. Additional details will be included in your initial acceptance email.
At this time, we are only accepting shipped artwork from US-based artists. No international shipping. Artists are responsible for covering costs to ship artwork to Nevermore. Any unsold artwork will be shipped back to you no more than 30 days after the end of the exhibition period with shipping costs covered by Nevermore.
🌹 Who is responsible for insuring artwork against damages and loss?
If you are not local to the Richmond area and you are shipping your artwork to us, you are responsible for insuring it against damages incurred during shipment. Additionally, if any element of the artwork is damaged in transit, including frames or hanging hardware, we will be unable to include it for display in the gallery exhibition. Nevermore is not able to make any repairs to damaged artwork. If we are shipping artwork that didn’t sell back to you, we will insure it for the values listed on your Gallery Information Sheet. Nevermore carries general business insurance that will cover items in the shop in case of vandalism or catastrophic damage at their listed values, but we recommend securing additional coverage for particularly valuable items.
🌹 When and how do I get paid?
We pay our artists the first week of the calendar month following the exhibition closing date. Payment is processed via check and available for pickup in person at Nevermore, or mailed to you at an address you provide to us.
🌹 How do I drop off artwork for sale or pick up unsold items?
Our current drop-off time is Wednesdays from 12pm-6pm or during Nevermore’s regular hours of operation: Fridays, Saturdays, Mondays 12pm-7pm and Sundays 12pm-5pm. You may pick up unsold artwork post gallery during these times as well.
🌹 Who is responsible for picking up unsold artwork?
If you are local to the Richmond area, you are responsible for picking up any unsold artwork after the exhibition period ends. You have 30 days after the final date of exhibition to pick your artwork up, after which time we will deem the artwork abandoned and dispose of it. We do not have the ability to store artwork long-term as our space is very limited.
If you are not local to the Richmond area, we will ship the item back to you within 30 days of the end of the exhibition.
🌹What is Nevermore doing to help my artwork sell?
In addition to being directly next door to world-renowned tattoo studio Unkindness Art, Nevermore will, to the best of our ability, advertise all of our gallery artists’ work on our website and social media pages, as well as in-person promotion at community events and neighborhood activities. We print and post up hard-copy flyers throughout the local area to advertise any and all gallery shows. Nevermore also hosts a gallery opening night at the beginning of each exhibition, and we strongly encourage our exhibiting artists to attend, invite friends and family, and celebrate with us!
❤️ We view this as a collaborative process with our artists - we’ll do our part, and we hope that our artists are also excited to be a part of Nevermore and will cross-promote as well. Nevermore is always happy to re-share social media posts if you tag us!
